What is Developmental Therapy?

Developmental Therapy is play-based therapy for children ages zero to three years old. Although our therapists are trained to work with your child in every area of development, Developmental Therapists specialize in delays in cognition, social-emotional development, and adaptive skills. These areas could include imitation,problem-solving, playing with others, eating, symbolic play, and more.

How do I know if my child needs Developmental Therapy?

You might consider an evaluation to see if your child in eligible for developmental therapy if:

  • They have social anxiety or prefers to play alone
  • Are not imitating in play
  • Have difficulty with adult-directed activities
  • Have trouble with transitions
  • Shorter attention span
  • Has difficulty eating, sleeping or dressing
  • Is not problem-solving in daily routines
  • Is not using their imagination in play
Who can receive Developmental Therapy?

Children ages zero to three years old showing a developmental delay in the area of cognition, social-emotional development, or self-help can receive Developmental Therapy. To qualify, your child must have a 30% delay or higher in one of these areas, or have a medical diagnosis that automatically entitles them to services. An initial assessment done through the Early Intervention Program is the first step to obtaining therapy for your child.

What is Early Intervention?
The Early Intervention Program is a state and federally funded program. They offer initial evaluations and ongoing therapy for children showing developmental delays in the core areas of development. Assessments and ongoing therapy are conducted in the home or natural setting (daycare) for the child. If your child is referred for services, you and your case manager will create a plan with your therapists to help your child meet their developmental milestones.
What does a session look like?

A typical session is 45 minutes of direct one on one therapy with the child, and 15 minutes of writing notes, answering questions and talking about what to implement until the next session. You will see the therapist sitting on the floor with your child, playing with toys either from the home or that they have brought themselves. We highly recommend that parents participate in therapy and ask questions as the session progresses. However, if that is not possible there are other ways of communication between the therapist and family to make sure your child is getting the best care.

Where does therapy take place?

Our therapists come to you! Therapy takes place in the child’s natural environment. That can either be at home, a daycare, or other family members home your child feels comfortable in.

How long will my child be in therapy?

There is no set amount of time your child will be in therapy. Some children only need it for a few months, others longer. Progress will be checked every six months your child receives therapy. Your child is eligible for Early Intervention services until they are three years old. These services are voluntary and discontinue them whenever you like.

How much does it cost?

Evaluations through the Early Intervention Program are paid for by the state of Illinois at no cost to you. Ongoing Developmental Therapy is billed to the state, not your insurance. If you have private insurance, you will pay a monthly family fee, based on the number of people living in your home and your household income. This will be explained, documented, and managed by your case manager. If you have public insurance, the state will pay for your
therapy services. If you have more questions about billing, please contact us.
